Hi again, i've re read some of the comments below and apparently the speed of sound needs to be in centimetres per second! This is my favourite method, but this time I cannot follow this way because my printer is incapable of such dimensions. Pan Flutes for beginners and professionals, hand-made and beautifully crafted. The pan flute (as other instruments) is a sophisticated musical instrument that requires you to learn techniques, terms, and at least basic knowledge of music to master it. Take the 8-tubes and the 2-tubes pan flutes and lye the latter on the first (see first image), lowering the accidentals by 1-2 cm. (Weve previously made our own cardboard tube kazoos and rainsticks such a fun way to explore sound and make music!) So if you were to bend a longer pipe the same amount, the change in pitch would be greater as the frequency change would be the same BUT the fractional change would be larger.

Don't stand in one place, move around constantly to get more mileage out of the jingle dress. Step two Step Two Use your penknife to cut a sharp notch 1 inch from the open end of the bamboo. Make a pan flute with both ends of the straws open and one pan flute where the straws all have one sealed end. How can I find the length in centimetres and not get this: length = 345 (my local speed of sound)/ 4*440 = .196. Although bamboo can be harvested in the wild, from the grove, for most people, ordering bamboo from a bamboo dealer, or going there in person to buy the bamboo or select the poles, is the way to go. Bamboo poles in the diameters usually used for Pan Flutes generally comes in lengths of 6 to 8 feet long. For a standard size Alto Pan Flute (G to g), select poles from inch in diameter down to 5/8 inch to inch to 3/8 inch. For the lower pipes of a Tenor Pan Flute, you will have to buy one inch diameter poles as well, and for the lowest pipes of a Bass Pan Flute, you may even need to go to 1 inch or 1 inch. Some bamboo dealers will let you select individual poles to buy if you go in person, whereas others will deal in bamboo by the bale, which is anywhere from about 25 to 50 poles or so. To be sure, you wont be able to use all the bamboo you buy, but if you can use even half of it, you are doing well usually its more like a third of the bamboo you buy that is usable for quality pipes. So, finding a way to open and close the tubes at wish will give us an extended range: for example, if the original range is C4-C5, the final range will be C4-C6. How to make your own Pan Flute. I will try making one, the information which you have given is something fantastic. I've noticed that if you have a round bulb with a hole it is possible to play an octave range by just blowing from different angles and making the hole smaller by covering it with your bottom lip. In this STEM activity, kids will make their very own pan flutes using straws. Teaching students about . Thank you! Take one tube. Other Flutes | Bio | Links | Contact, QUESTIONS, COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK WELCOME! I see in hind sight how I should have guessed it but I'd appreciate it if next time you would mark you units properly so I and others like me don't get so lost again. Step 2: Make a clear plan Determine the increasing number of pipe lengths your pan flute will contain. If you are not interested in all the math and physics behind the project, you can jump directly to the practice section. Using the first formula shown in the previous step we obtain the list of length: 31.69, 29.91, 28.23, 26.65, 25.15, 23.74, 22.41, 21.15, 19.96, 18.84, 17.78, 16.79, 15.84 rounded to second decimal digit, measured in centimeters. Two tubes of equal length, but one closed at one end and the other completely open, produce the same note within two adjacent octaves. 1. Encourage children to measure and cut their own straws. Understand that the flute is weaker than your other current instruments and it's primary use is to stop the others from burning out from overuse. For another project (a tin whistle) I've started to sand them by hand with a medium grit sandpaper. Keep practicing and learn to play a song with . To make a bamboo flute, you'll need a drill, a rotary tool such as a Dremel, and attachments for it. The next one I will make will be a D-whistle, the traditional Irish tuning for this instrument. When the glue is dry remove the external carboard with a knife, a scalpel or a pair of scissors. Anyway, you can use any material you wish, the only difference will be in the timbre (the kind of sound the instrument makes). Reply Take five wide straws and cut them into varying lengths. Each tube have a different length but, usually, the same diameter of all other tubes. Since the process depends also on what you have choosen as cap, those can be only general directions. Place the double-sided tape onto the other black strip of cardstock and place it on top of your straws, lining it up with the first piece of cardstock. Aubrey Smalls 875 subscribers Subscribe 2.2K Share 87K views 2 years ago I show you step by step on how to make a pan flute out of straws. on Step 1. Did you make this project? The Panflute is a craftable Pre-Hardmode Bard weapon. I recommended starting with a small pan flute no bigger than two octaves (13 - 15 pipes.) To conciliate this last passion with music I made a pan flute, an ancient instrument belonging to various cultures. No. As you'll notice the frequency is inversely proportional to the length of the pipe. Question amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "manual"; 3 years ago, 3 years ago When used, it empowers nearby players and the user with the Resource Consumption Chance II empowerment . Try to play some notes. After you have bought a bunch of bamboo poles of different sizes, the next step is to rough cut them into lengths that are somewhat longer than the length you will finally be using once the pipe is precision cut down to size. The cardinal rule here is to always cut substantially longer than the final length youll wind up using because its always easy to cut bamboo off, but not so easy to put it back on. Generally speaking, the best bamboo for Pan Flute pipes comes from the middle of the bamboo stalk, or culm there, the walls are usually not too thick and not too thin, but just about right, and the bore diameter is the most steady and constant throughout. And in the middle of the stalk, there are usually none of the annoying grooves or indentations in the cross-sectional profile of the bamboo that are caused by the branches, which usually branch off only at the top nodes of the culm.
at the bottom end. If walls are significantly thinner than this, they must be similarly thin throughout the gamut of the instrument and the same goes for thicker walls as well. Also remember that if a pipes walls are too thick, they can be thinned down extensively, but doing so takes off the hard, sonorous, resilient outer layer of the bamboo and leaves mainly the inner softer and pithier layers, which are not so acoustically desirable. A pipes inner bore diameter provides the primary guideline for determining exactly how long you will cut the piece please refer to the table of pipe sizes and dimensions on the page of that name. Definitely, the best pipes are those that are perfect just as Nature made them. Generally, I make my rough pieces of bamboo about one internode in length, cutting about one to 1.5 inches below each node. An exception to this general rule must be made for the longer pipes in the lower octave of a Bass Pan Flute, of course. , Step Three: Baking or Kiln Drying the Pipes
First, if we make a single hole, its size doesn't matter. I choose to use light cardboard. You should be able to find all of these items from the hardware store. This is how we made our straw pan flutes, although you dont have to make them exactly as we did. We need to arrange them in a practical way, so we start by taking all "white" tubes, e.g. Actually, an open tube requires a correction factor that depends on frequency and inner diameter, but the difference should be barely noticeable. (You can also make noise blowing right into the straw. #2 Use the wavelength and diameter and solve for the length of each straw wind column ( L ). Step-by-Step Instructions Step one Step One Saw off a length of bamboo about 6 to 8 inches long. This straw pan flute is so easy to make that kids can make it all on their own! Share it with us! Hi, I seem to be having a problem with calculating the length. We placed them on the tape in this order to better space them out equally, but it might be easier for younger kids to just put them on the tape from longest to shortest and not really worry about spacing. 4 years ago. To optimize the space and to use only three 1 m pipes, we will cut each pipe as follow: 1st pipe: 31.69 cm + 29.91 cm + 22.41 cm + 15.84 cm (low C + C#/Db + F#/Gb + high C, about 2 mm left) 2nd pipe: 28.23 cm + 26.65 cm + 25.15 cm + 19.96 cm (D + D#/Eb + E + G#/Ab, almost nothing left) 3rd pipe: 23.74 cm + 21.15 cm + 18.84 cm + 17.78 cm + 16.79 cm (F + G + A +A#/Bb + B, less than 2 cm left) As you can see, I wrote also the note corresponding to each section. Take five wide straws and cut them into varying lengths. After the pipes have been oiled, and the excess oil has been thoroughly removed, the next step is to finish or paint the pipes. The purpose of painting or finishing the pipes is mainly aesthetic in nature, but it can have acoustical benefits as well. A wide variety of different finishes may be used, such as acrylic lacquer, oil finishes, polyurethane, or various kinds of varnishes, including acoustical violin varnish. I highly recommend the latter, as it not only beautifies and preserves the bamboo, but also improves the overall sound and acoustics of the pipes. Or, you may simply wax or oil the outsides of the pipes, as you have done with their interiors, or apply no paint or finish at all, preferring to go natural. A glossy finish is most recommended for the bottom frame or boot of the Pan Flute, even if the pipes themselves are left in an unfinished, natural state; one of the things I have done with the frame or boot has been to apply a very thin layer of clear epoxy glue to it, using a very thin piece of plywood as a kind of palette knife applicator for doing this. The frame or boot may also be stained to get it to be the right color, and even brown or black shoe polish can be used for this purpose. If you have good basic woodworking and craftsmanship skills, you will be able to come up with a good creative and aesthetically pleasing solution. I'm very sorry that I haven't take any picture Maybe I will do another tin whistle, and use the project for another Instructable. I found this tutorial very useful, I taught some children how to make a pan flute using these instructions and it was a huge success!I also tried a different method to close the tubes: I've cut them a bit longer than required and then I've put some plasticine at the bottom. There are two basic schools of thought when it comes to how to thin down pipe walls from the outside, and from the inside, with each of them having their respective pros and cons. The way I prefer is to thin the pipe walls from the outside until they are of perfect thickness. To do this, I go, from rough thinning to fine thinning, from whittling to rasping to scraping. The best pipes are just scrape and go, in which all you need to do to thin the pipe wall down to its proper thickness is to scrape the outer skin off of it but sometimes, the walls need to be thinned down quite a bit more than that. The other school of thought is to thin down the pipe walls by reaming the inner soft, pithy layer out from the inside with various drills and reamers. The main rationale for this approach is to remove the soft, pithy inner layer of the bamboo, which is the least inherently sonorous and resilient, leaving nothing soft to dampen the pipes sound. This sounds great in theory, but in practice, it only works if you have a solid, reliable method of reaming out the inside in a straight, uniform manner, as ruts and/or ridges on the interior of a pipe bore will warp, distort or roughen the sound of a pipe.
If you hear 2 notes when you play the C, D or E tube, then lower the 2-tubes group. In my case the first C is a C4 and the last C is a C5. You can even give your song a name. Shakuhachi: The East Wind |
Next place the middle length straw right in the center. This whole matter of pipe beveling is not only a highly individual one; it is also quite delicate, sensitive and complex. And so, I will devote a whole article to discussing the different styles of pipe beveling, and the pros and cons of each. With this in mind, I will now proceed, quite simply and directly, to tell you how I bevel my own pipes, in a step-by-step manner: The first step in anyones pipe beveling process is to file or sand the tops of the pipes absolutely flat. This provides a straight and steady baseline from which all subsequent beveling of the pipe rims can proceed. My preferred tool for doing this is a large flat rasp or bastard file; it is possible to mechanize the process with a belt sander, but care must be taken that the pipe tops are sanded very lightly, the minimum amount necessary to flatten the tops into a level surface. After this is completed, and a satisfactory level surface is thus created, the next step is to round off the outer rims of the pipes, both on their front and back sides make them nice and round. This will create the first smooth and comfortable surface against which your lips can glide easily. The other reason for rounding off the outer edges of the pipe rims is that bamboo splinters very easily, and if this is not done as a preventive measure, splintering is very likely to occur with further filing and beveling.. Lay them out next to each other, with the top edges lined up. Pretty simple, uh? So = 11 cm You'll also need a general purpose hand-held sander, masking tape, a saw, a ruler or measuring tape, and a box cutter or sharp knife. The process of fitting the slats so that the pipes interface well with each other is one that can be done in either a quick and perfunctory fashion, or in a more precise fashion whatever level of painstaking precision, or relative lack thereof, you choose to select, there needs to be a relatively high level of consistency and uniformity in the slatting depths of the pipes from top to bottom. You shouldnt have one pair of interfacing slats be cut very deeply with the ones immediately above or below it being cut very shallowly, for example. The slatting depth between pipes, which is measured by the closest that the inner bores of adjacent pipes come to each other at their narrowest point, is merely one dimension of pipe slatting and fitting. The slats need to be angled inwards ever so slightly towards the players side so that the surfaces of adjoining slats fit together perfectly on the Pan Flute Mold. Also, when viewed from the tops to the bottoms of adjacent pipes, the pipes and their slats need to be fairly uniform in width from top to bottom. Twisting or skewing of the slats from top to bottom should also be eliminated.
Write the numbers of each note onto the printable recording sheet. They also have the opportunity to write and record their own music.
Do the same on the top. We need to make the pan flute in tune and well constructed. If you use an handsaw make sure it can cut the material or you will be ruining it. on Introduction, Hiam working on a similar project for school where i will be needing the varying length for the notes Is it possible to get some help from youMy tubes have a diameter of 10mmI am having difficulties to get the lengths for the notesThanksDevesh, Greetings :) I've been wanting to make a set of panpipes for ages, but had no clue where to begin. If you can spot my error, please clue me in :). How to make a pan flute from straws or PVC pipes Pan pipes are easy to construct at home as the process is relatively straightforward. davido@fourwindsflutes.com. 13 drinking straws (You might not really need all 13 straws. I wonder what physics stand by this bending technique. Im going to suspend them to trees and have wind blow through or into them, creating a haunting sound. From what you see on the left above to what you see at right above only takes a couple days of relaxed labor to produce. You might be able to use 1 straw for multiple straw sizes.) Math:Kids will need to measure and compare lengths in order to create their straw pan flute. Place the straws together from longest to shortest. Also, a slightly more detailed explanation of what number gets plugged into which symbol and the relation between the two formulae would be appreciated. Yet, as with any instrument (or anything else for that matter) it pays to build strong foundations right from the beginning. A short straw produces a high note. Step Twelve: Oiling and Finishing the Pipes
With a Dremel tool you can speed up the process, unless you prefer doing it by hand, but be aware that you will change the sandpaper bit many, many times. 1. is appropriate for the top end. The reinforcing strip(s) for the bottom side of the frame can also be done in a similar manner, tracing around the entire periphery of the instrument with a pencil to get the proper silhouette or outline. Just remember to cut the front and back strips at least a centimeter or two longer than needed, to cut off to the right length when the end pieces are added; similarly, the bottom strip(s) are to be cut at least two to three millimeters wider than needed, and then trimmed off later. An Exacto knife and/or saw are the best cutting implements to use for cutting the strips., I have usually made the end pieces for my Pan Flute frames from bamboo whose inner or bore diameter is large enough to fit snugly around the outside of the top and bottom pipes; however, other makers have carved them out of wood. The bottom edges of the end pieces are filed or rasped off to be flush with the bottom surface of the instrument, but their top ends can be carved into various aesthetic designs, which are usually spired or pointed. It is usually recommended that the last strip to go on in the assembly of the frame is the (last) bottom strip, which is cut to cover the bottom edges of the end pieces, providing an unbroken and uniform surface on the instruments bottom end. The fitting of the end pieces and their joinery with the front and back reinforcing strips is another point to test and show the level of craftsmanship of the Pan Flute artisan. I trust that you will work out your own best procedure or protocol for doing this joinery work as your craftsmanship and experience unfold and develop. The most aesthetically pleasing frame is one that appears to be seamless.. My kids loved writing their own songs and performing them for me. I'm Chelsey, a former teacher and parent living on the central coast of California. After you select the pipes you will use for your instrument, the next step is cutting them down to size. The lower end of the pipe will be cut off to produce the proper length of the respective pipe, and indicated in the table of pipe lengths and bore diameters on the Pipe Sizes and Dimensions page. For most of the pipes, their lower ends will be cut off in a slanted fashion, with the long side being on the side of the pipe that is closest towards the bottom of the instrument, or the low pipes that are held firmly in the palm of the dominant hand. The low pipes should be on your right if you are right handed, and on your left if you are left handed. Since natural bamboo pipes rarely if ever grow absolutely straight, there will be the problem of how to orient the pipes correctly selecting the shortest cross sectional axis of the bore to be the front to back or audience side / players side axis, the surface of the pipe that lies directly on the Pan Flute mold should be slightly concave and not convex. If the side that lies on the Pan Flute mold should be convex, the pipe will not seat well on the mold, and will rock back and forth, leading to potential problems in the assembly process.
(And less prep for you!). As I've aforementioned, you can skip this passage if you don't want (or need) to understand the physics beyond a pan flute. Take the thing you want to use to close the end and close the end. The best way to cut the tube almost exactly (unless you use the printer) is to measure only one section and cut, then measure the next one and cut, and so on. Variables: L - length of pipe - wavelength d - diameter of pipe Calculation: L = /2 - (0.4) (d) #3 Measure and cut your straws the length of the eight wind columns ( L) you calculated. (We cut ours into the following lengths: 6 inches, 5.5 inches, 5 inches, 4 inches, and 3.5 inches.) If you don't know how to use a tube-cutter and you cannot figure out by yourself feel free to ask. Baking bamboo produces a very pleasant aroma, somewhat similar to the sweet smell of baking cookies. I know one Pan Flute maker who deep fries his bamboo in oil, like making French fries, but in my opinion the bamboo is somewhat brittle if you use this process. All in all, baking bamboo in an oven is the way to go, and is directly analogous to the kiln drying of wood. Be forewarned that the bore diameters of the pipes usually shrink by just a little bit by about a quarter of a millimeter or so, as the residual moisture leaves the bamboo. Occasionally, a piece of bamboo will crack during baking, but this is actually quite rare; sometimes, small cracks or fissures may appear in a bamboo pipe after baking, but in my experience, these small cracks or fissures do not widen or go anywhere after baking, the bamboo is pretty much stabilized., Step Four: Pipe Selection
